On 18 April 2024 the NHL Board of Governors voted, and a desert franchise became a mountain one. Smith Entertainment Group took the hockey assets of the Arizona Coyotes north, and a league of 31 settled cities became a league with one brand new arrival.
For eight weeks the team had no name at all. On 13 June 2024 it got the plainest one available: Utah Hockey Club. No mascot, no nickname, no folklore. A placeholder that fans would turn into an identity before a permanent name arrived.
That gap is the whole subject of this study. A club with a roster, a rink and a schedule, but no archive. Every graphic in the first season had to invent the thing it was supposed to be referencing.
The night the Utah Hockey Club played its first game, and won it 5 : 2
Eighty two games, a coin flip of a record, and a captain who outscored the noise. Utah finished sixth in the Central and eleventh in the West, which is another way of saying the first season was closer to real than anybody expected.
The system runs on a deliberate contrast. The Arena is black, monochrome and editorial, built for anything happening right now. The State is full colour landscape compositing, all mountain, snow and red rock, saved for anything the club wants remembered. Use the switch at the top of the page to move between them.
A roundel for stamps and score bugs, the state silhouette as the primary crest, a standalone U for cropping into large scale, and the mammoth for moments that need teeth. Black carries the weight, the blue does the talking, white cuts the edge.
